For EISENHOWER from ARNOLD.
Xylidine now being drummed for shipment. Reference B-139 from Eisenhower to Marshall and Arnold. (See page 17 Out Log) First 1,000 drums equivalent to 170 short tons will arrive New York for shipment on or before 10 March 1944, the balance of Xylidine requested will be delivered New York at a rate of about 250 drums per week thereafter. Arrangements being made for shipment from New York by British petroleum representative here. Request you advise if this quantity takes care of all fighter aircraft grade 150 fuel requirements.
Information previously supplied by KNERR indicates satisfactory operation of Merlin and possibly R-2800 engines on this fuel. This is substantiated by our accelerated model tests here, however, the use of this fuel in Allison engines should be approached cautiously as five of these engines have failed here on test stand with this fuel. Accelerated tests are being continued to determine whether this type of engine can be cleared. Requested detailed report of flight tests, which have been conducted with grade 150 fuel containing Amino Aromatics.
