Condition:
Engine BMW 801 D2 / 25513
From 1.12.42
Engine BMW 801 D2/25892.
Tight engine cowl.
Gills.
Armament: 2 MG 17, two MG 151 without ammunition.
ETC 501 with intermediate rack
Ju 87 auxiliary tank racks under the wings.
Auxiliary tank fairing according to BSK 72313 (prototype).
Take-off weight: |
without tanks, without bombs: |
G = 8,281 lbs. (3756 kg). s = 0.718 m
with tanks full, without bombs: |
G = 9,392 lbs. (4260 kg), s = 0.705 m
with tanks full, 551 lb. (250 kg) bombs: |
G = 9,943 lbs. (4510 kg), s = 0.715 m
1.) |
Determination of the level speeds for the operational conditions.
2.) |
Functional testing of the auxiliary tank system.
3.) |
Behavior of the oil tank ventilation system with 55 l oil.
4.) |
Remaining fuel amount of the auxiliary tanks.
1.) |
The level speeds for
various operational conditions could only be flown in low supercharger
gear due to bad weather and lack of time.
The values obtained at sea level (0 m) are taken from the attached graph and summarized in the following table.
Condition: |
Vwc for n = 2400 at Sea level |
Vwc for n = 2100 at Sea level
with auxiliary tank
ETC 501 without bombs
without rack fairings. |
254 mph (408 km/h) |
225 mph (362 km/h)
Engine change
with auxiliary tank
ETC 501 + 551 lb. (250 kg) bombs
with rack fairings |
277 mph (445 km/h) |
245 mph (395 km/h)
with auxiliary tank
ETC 501 without bombs
with rack fairings |
283 mph (456 km/h) |
252 mph (405 km/h)
without auxiliary tank
ETC 501 without bombs
with rack fairings |
293 mph (471 km/h) |
258 mph (416 km/h)
It can be seen that an improvement in the level speeds of 30 and 27 mph (48 and 43 km/h)
respectively was achieved in combat and economical power respectively through the fairing of the
Ju 87 auxiliary tank rack.
(The measurement listed in Flight Report No. 2 under b) is thus correct
and the one mentioned under c) has to be considered an erroneous measurement due to engine trouble).
2.) |
The pump system is working properly. The low flow rate
of the auxiliary tank pumps is striking, amounting to only 380 l/h per
side.
3.) |
Flight operations with 55
liter of oil in the oil tank was possible without oil loss from the vent pipe.
Difficulties were encountered, however, with the filling of the tank,
since with pressure filling the determination of the refilled amount
of oil was inaccurate and even at slight excess of the maximum quantity
(55 liters) of oil loss occurred already on the ground run-up via the
vent line.
Therefore, for the testing, after the engine warm-up (no more oil in
the sump), the oil tank was re-filled normally up to the fill pipe (49
Ltr ~) and the remaining oil quantity supplied through the pipe for the tank vent line.
4.) |
The auxiliary tanks can be completely emptied during flight operations. The measured remaining amount amounted to 0-1 Ltr
Remark:
The aircraft was transferred on 27/12/42 to Rechlin for tests.
